Dead job market for computer science. Enrollment now down 70% from 2000 levels.

But with enrollment in the CS curriculum down so much just think how much demand there is gonna be for the remaining supply.

Sure.

Thats the ticket !

Just like the textile or buggy whip industry.

All those people stopped signing up for CS cause they didn't want to write a prime number program.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That seems to be the desperate new tact the CS depts in colleges are taking now.

And the downward trend isn't expected to reverse soon. The association says about 1 percent of incoming freshmen have indicated computer science as a probable major, a 70 percent drop from the rate in 2000.

Oh fuck you again?
Is there some specific reason you're like to bash CS? A valid reason? Of are you just playing Benny Hinn?

Now I know you hate computers, but if you're going to post on forums, there are some very basic etiquette you should get through your head. Lesson #1: don't start a new thread if you're talking about the same thing. Again.

Boy I hope IBM doesn't find out about this.  They might stop paying me $75,000 a year to write prime number programs.  Oh wait, I do real work.  Prime number programs?  Come on.

P.S. Way to not understand what you're reading.  Here's an article I found:

http://www.softwarebyrob.com/articles/Computer_Science_Enrollment_Going_Down_Taking_Software_Jobs.aspx

Some key points:

  • "Whether you've read the articles or experienced it first-hand, there is a noticeable lack of qualified programmers in the U.S. According to the US Department of Labor, 8 of the 10 fastest growing occupations between 2000 and 2010 will be computer related."
  • "The reality is that hundreds of thousands of qualified candidates are still needed..."

Now since I am actually able to understand both sides of an article, I will grant that lower enrollment is not a great thing for long-term job prospects, and the author is very aware of that, but you have to distinguish between "less students are enrolling in CS, which will probably lead to some negative trends in jobs," and, "less students are enrolling in CS, which is proof that the job market is dead."

Shit, dude! $75,000? I won't be making that for another 3 years. Congrats! I'd pay this thread a lot more respect if Lockheed wasn't offering me a $3000 finder's fee for recruiting software engineers...

Not to feed the trolls, but:

Dropping enrollment rates in CS means less CS graduates.

Less CS graduates means fewer programmers on the market...

Fewer programmers means...  increased demand.

Increased demand means...  oh, that's right, better salaries and a job market eager to hire.  Doesn't sound too bad to me.

Anyone who doesn't want to code is more than welcome to not enroll in CS - More jobs for the rest of us.

Unless you actually think the demand for competent programmers is going to DECREASE, I mean, we're definitely moving away from this technology fad and even if we don't go back to the abacus soon, I'm sure we've got every program we need already, it'd be foolish to make more now.
